World Language Pathways
New guidance has been created for LWSD secondary staff, students, and families around culturally sustaining and rigorous World Language pathways for Spanish-speaking students (Heritage and Native Speakers). Our goal is to make sure every student and family is informed of their choices to develop and maintain literacy in their home language and meet World Language requirements, including the Heritage Pathway and the Credit through Proficiency Testing Pathway.
Students should have the choice for pathway they pursue, and we recommend the Heritage Pathway, AP Spanish Pathway or Proficiency Testing pathway as the most appropriate for most Spanish-speaking students, regardless of literacy level.
Guidance is based on OSPI recommendations, feedback from Heritage Student Listening Sessions, and best practices to support multilingual students develop and maintain literacy in their home language.
